EESC newsletter published an article about the gap between men and women self-employed

This December European Economic and Social Committee’s newsletter published an article written by Maria Helena de Felipe about the XVth Edition of the Meda Women Entrepreneurs Forum. You can read it completely in the PDF document we are sharing with you in this post.

This article, after praising the participants who took part in the event, describes how the statistics published by Eurostat about 2023 second quarter show an almost 7% gap between the percentage of men and women self-employed. Self-employed men represent the 16,2% of all employed men in the EU while only 9,5% of women are self-employed. A fact that, in the end, affects in a very negative way to EU’s competitiveness.

According to the forum’s analysis, cultural factors, insufficient support for women-led bussinesses and lack of policies to amend the gender gap and promote the conciliation between work and family are the roots of this problem in the Mediterranean region. Also, the difficulties encountered by women entrepreneurs to get financement are signaled too in this article.

A mainstreamed aproach to gender equality, whith all countries assuring a better representation of women in all policy areas and sectors shine among all the proposed ways to get a solution for this problems.
